Mortgage Process

Taking Your First Steps

Buying a home and getting a mortgage can seem a little overwhelming at first. But if you know what to do and when, it isn't difficult. And remember, if you choose ESL for your mortgage, our Mortgage Origination Counselors are always here to help you along the way. To get started, take these simple steps:

  1. Get Pre-Qualified. Look at your financial picture. Is it manageable? What monthly debts do you have? How much cash is available for the purchase of a home (down payment, closing costs, escrows)? Find out how much of a home and what size mortgage you can afford before you shop. You may want to use our mortgage calculators to get a ballpark estimate of the size of the mortgage you can afford.
  2. Get Pre-Approved. Contact an ESL Mortgage Origination Counselor. That way, you'll be pre-approved for credit and income before you start shopping for your home. Being pre-approved for financing prior to finding a property can be a very smart thing to do. Having a Pre-approval letter shows real estate brokers and sellers that you are a qualified buyer and may give more weight to your purchase offer.
