Why has ESL implemented the Enhanced Login Security Feature? ^top

The security of your money is, of course, very important to you. It is to us, too! That's why when the Federal Financial Institutions Examination Council (FFIEC), regulators that oversee banks and credit unions, announced that additional measures of security for online banking were needed, we knew we had to comply.

Our Enhanced Login Security feature helps protect you against the threat of identity theft and fraud by requiring you to provide something additional beyond your member number and password to log in.

By placing a "cookie" on your computer, we now confirm your identity as the true owner of your accounts using the correct combination of your member number, Password and your computer. When the "cookie" is not identified, the answers to three Challenge Questions must be provided before you can access Internet Banking.

This enhanced security means that even if someone steals your password AND member number, the fraudster cannot access your accounts without also knowing the answers to the Challenge Questions or possessing your computer.

In other words, Enhanced Login Security can give you more peace of mind when you bank online.

When will I have to answer Challenge Questions? ^top

Answering Challenge Questions before accessing Internet Banking is how we will "authenticate" you when we don't recognize your computer. Here are examples of situations where your Challenge Questions would be presented:

  • You've enrolled in Enhanced Login Security and now you are logging in on another computer, one that you have not enrolled yet.

Here's what to do:

      1. Login to ESL Internet Banking. Remember, you'll have to answer your Challenge Questions to access Internet Banking from a different computer or browser.
      2. Click on User Options. (It's a red tab located in the top right hand corner in ESL Internet Banking.)
      3. Select Enhanced Login Security Set Up and follow the directions to enroll both your accounts and your computer.
  • You've enrolled in Enhanced Login Security using one browser, like Internet Explorer as your browser and now you're logging in using a different browser, like FireFox.

  • Your computer is set up to remove cookies from your computer on a routine basis.

Here's what to do:

      1. You may wish to install Adobe Flash Player on your computer to assist in retaining the Enhanced Login Security cookie on your computer). Click here to install

What if I am unsure about the answers to my Challenge Questions? ^top

Enhanced Login Security works hand in hand with our Challenge Question feature to keep your ESL Internet Banking experience safe and free from the dangers of fraud and identity theft.

This means that you'll need to answer your Challenge Questions when you login to Internet Banking from an unregistered computer or browser or if your computer routinely clears cookies. (You may wish to install Adobe Flash Player on your computer to assist in retaining the Enhanced Login Security cookie on your computer). Click here to install

Why risk being locked out of Internet Banking if you can't remember how you originally answered your Challenge Questions? It's simple to "refresh" your memory and your answers so the stay top of mind.

Here's what to do:

      1. Login to ESL Internet Banking. Be sure to login from the computer you originally enrolled. (This way, you will not be presented with Challenge Questions to access Internet Banking.)
      2. Click on User Options. (It's a red tab located in the top right hand corner in ESL Internet Banking.)
      3. Select Challenge Set Up and follow the directions.
      4. When selecting your answers, use responses that are short and easy to remember exactly as you input them.
      5. Answers are not case sensitive.

Should I enroll other computers that I use? ^top

Enhanced Login Security works by using your member number, your Password AND your computer to identify you as the true owner of your ESL Internet Banking accounts. When we don't recognize your computer (or the browser you are using) as enrolled in Enhanced Login Security feature, you are asked to confirm your identification by answering the three Challenge Questions you have previously set up.

While it only takes a couple of seconds to answer your Challenge Questions, it's easy to enroll additional computers in the Enhanced Login Security feature and avoid that step all together.

Remember to only enroll computers that you are the primary user for. DO NOT enroll public access computers, like those found at the library or in hotels or even at ESL Internet Banking kiosks found at our branches.

What's the difference between enrolling my computer vs. my accounts only? ^top

When you signed up for Enhanced Login Security, you may have noticed that there were options to enroll your computer and your accounts or just your accounts.

Enrolling both your computer and your accounts is the recommended option when you are using a computer for which you are the primary user, like your home computer. In this situation, once you've enrolled that computer and your accounts, you will not need to provide answers to your Challenge Questions to access Internet Banking (unless you're logging in using another browser or you routinely clear cookies off your computer.)

When you enroll just your accounts, we do not place a cookie on your computer. Therefore, we will not be able to recognize your computer and you will always be asked to answer your Challenge Questions to access Internet Banking. This is the preferred option to use when you routinely login to Internet Banking from computers with public access (like a library computer.)

But don't worry! Both options add extra security to your ESL Internet Banking experience!
