2017 ESL College Scholarship Winners

Third Crop of ESL Scholars Honored

June 2017

Although not quite like a high school graduation, excitement abounded at ESL Headquarters on Chestnut Street this spring. For the third consecutive year, ESL awarded five college-bound high school students $2,000 each from the local financial institution’s college scholarship program.

Amid the pomp and the circumstance, as well as student and parental pride, the evening not only highlighted the qualities that each of the students exhibited, but also acknowledged the concern regarding how to pay for the rising costs of a college education.

“With the rising cost of higher education, scholarships can be a deciding factor for students and their families,” said Faheem Masood, President/CEO, ESL Federal Credit Union. “Our ESL College Scholarship award recipients are stand-outs in the classroom and the community. We are pleased to be able to invest in the future of our youth by awarding scholarships to deserving college-bound students.”

Recipients of this year’s scholarship include high school seniors: Christopher Coriddi, Honeoye Central High School; Lea Filyk, Webster Thomas High School; Latoya McNish, Brockport High School; Christian Montanez, Churchville-Chili High School; and Adrianus Veenje, homeschooled.

These five students were chosen from among more than 150 applicants as the area’s best and brightest. To be eligible for the scholarships, applicants must have been members in good standing at ESL Federal Credit Union, a high school senior within the Greater Rochester area for the 2016-2017 school year, and be attending an accredited college or university in the fall of 2017. A panel of judges selected students based on their academic record, extracurricular activities, community service, and most importantly, their reflection of ESL’s core values of accountability, caring about people, integrity, and initiative.
