Q&A with Richard Ostendorf
Assistant Branch Manager, Canandaigua Office

Richard Ostendorf, Assistant Branch Manager, Canandaigua Branch

What brought you to ESL?

When I sold my businesses in 2019, I wasn’t ready to retire. I was always interested in banking and finance but didn’t know where to start. I had several friends that worked in the banking industry, so I sought out their advice. One friend told me that ESL had a great reputation for training and development, and he thought ESL would be an excellent fit.

Did you expect to advance the way that you did at ESL?

When I was hired, I really didn’t have expectations of advancing. I was part of the flex team and enjoyed what I was doing. The longer I spent time in the branches the more I realized that ESL truly cared for its employees and was dedicated to making the organization a great place to work. I wanted to be part of that and shared it with my supervisors, who were very supportive and actively took part in my development. I was soon promoted to Assistant Branch Manager.

What are some of the things that have helped you along the way?

My direct supervisors were my biggest cheerleaders. They actively trained me on all aspects of working at the branch. They wanted to make sure that when I was promoted that I was set up for success. ESL is very proactive in developing their team. I went to several operations, sales, and leadership classes that were instrumental in my success.

What are some things that have surprised you?

With no banking background ESL took a chance on me. My resume probably didn’t fit the mold of a typical Universal Banker.

Why have you stayed at ESL?

It’s a combination of factors. Strong company culture, growth opportunities, work-life balance, and trust in ESL’s leadership. I enjoy coming to work every day!

What else do you think is important for people to know?

There are obstacles that older workers sometimes face when looking to pursue a career change. ESL not only was willing to hire me, but they also took an active role in helping me advance my career.
