ESL Awards $20k in Scholarships to Ten High-School Students

Rochester, NY — For the sixth consecutive year, ESL Federal Credit Union has awarded college-bound high school students with a $2,000 scholarship from ESL’s College Scholarship program. This year, in celebration of the company’s 100th anniversary, ESL recognized ten students who demonstrate how they help our community in a unique and meaningful way.

This year’s scholarship award recipients include:

  • Jennifer Adler, East Rochester High School
  • Elizabeth (Liza) Cotter, Allendale Columbia School
  • Harrison Davis, The Harley School
  • Sophia Harvey, Victor Senior High School
  • Jasmine Kiley, Penfield High School
  • Mason Kuhn, Kendall Jr/Sr High School
  • Somayya Upal, Pittsford Sutherland High School
  • Emma Magioncalda, Our Lady of Mercy
  • David Munechika, Fairport High School
  • Ijeoma Nwugwo, Victor Senior High School

“These ESL College Scholarships help offset the rising costs of a college education and recognizes the exemplary achievements of students who make positive contributions to our community,” said Celeste Kier, Senior Vice President/Director, Marketing & Customer Experience, ESL Federal Credit Union. “Investing in the education of our youth by assisting with student success is one important way to help make Rochester a better place to live, work, and raise a family.”

To be eligible, applicants must have been:

  • A member in good standing at ESL Federal Credit Union
  • A high school senior in the Greater Rochester area during 2019/2020 school year
  • Attending accredited college or university in Fall 2020

Nearly 250 applicants vied for this year’s ESL College Scholarship, providing official copies of their transcripts, letters of recommendation from a school official and community/volunteer organization, and a list of extracurricular activities and community service. In alignment with ESL’s purpose, students were encouraged to write about how they help their community “thrive and prosper.”

ESL will be sharing highlights of all winners on their website.
