ESL and MCC Help Students Gain Banking, Financial Services Experience while Earning Degree

New Program Aims to Create Pathway to Careers, Strengthen Workforce Diversity

Rochester, NY — Monroe Community College and ESL Federal Credit Union announced tonight its first class of ESL/MCC Scholars at a ceremony held at ESL’s Corporate Headquarters, 225 Chestnut Street in Rochester. The five students selected for this program are:

  • Ashlye Barbosa, Rochester, N.Y.
  • Marcella Davis, Rochester, N.Y.
  • Jacob Morey, Greece, N.Y.
  • Jaclyn Ortiz, Gates, N.Y.
  • Brandon Ruiz, Greece, N.Y.

Students were offered a part-time, paid teller position at ESL’s corporate headquarters, or at a local branch, and a $1,000 scholarship for each semester they participate (up to four semesters). Benefits also include professional skill development opportunities, mentoring, and exposure to a variety of career paths. Students also have the option to obtain academic credit for their work experience.

The long-term goal of the program is to retain the students upon graduation from MCC through either full-time employment at ESL or as they work part-time while pursuing their bachelor’s degrees at a local institution (with assistance from ESL’s tuition reimbursement program).

Interested MCC students had the opportunity to apply online (esl.org/SCHOLARS) to be considered for the program. Qualified students must be enrolled full-time in an MCC business-related degree program during the Spring 2018 semester, maintain a minimum GPA of 2.5, and be able to work in the United States on a permanent basis.

“This strategic partnership with Monroe Community College will enhance ESL’s commitment to developing, promoting, and retaining a talented, diverse workforce,” said Faheem Masood, President/CEO of ESL Federal Credit Union. “It will benefit talented students from a variety of backgrounds who are interested in earning scholarship dollars, internship credit, and part-time employment with ESL — all while earning their associate’s degrees.”

“The ESL/MCC Scholars program opens an important door for Monroe Community College students who are passionate about business and financial services,” said Monroe Community College President Anne Kress. “Congratulations to the first cohort of students upon their acceptance into the program, and thank you to our valued partner, ESL Federal Credit Union, for believing in our students’ potential.”

Employees, board members, and immediate family members (living in the same household as the employee) of ESL, ESL Investment Services, LLC, and ESL Trust Services, LLC, were not eligible for the program.
