ESL Awards $10K in Scholarships to Five Local High School Students

Rochester, NY — ESL Federal Credit Union awarded five college-bound high school students with scholarships during a reception at ESL’s corporate headquarters. The winners each received $2,000 from ESL’s College Scholarship program.

This year’s scholarship award recipients include high school seniors:

  • Ben Christensen, Irondequoit High School
  • Margaret (Maggie) Dempsey, Avon Central High School
  • Kathryn Hardin, Hilton Central High School
  • Gabriel Quintero, Irondequoit High School
  • Chynna Sharp, Greece Athena High School

“We are pleased to award these scholarships to five exemplary student leaders of our community,” said Faheem Masood, President & CEO, ESL Federal Credit Union. “These students are recognized for their excellent academic records, great community service, and alignment with ESL’s core values. The scholarship each student receives for their model academic careers represents ESL’s investment in our future leaders. We want to make sure we are doing our part to help students when it comes to managing college expenses.”

To be eligible, applicants must have been:

  • A member in good standing at ESL Federal Credit Union
  • A high school senior in the Greater Rochester area during 2018/2019 school year
  • Attending accredited college or university in Fall 2019

More than 130 applicants competed for these awards by providing official copies of their transcripts, letters of recommendation from a school official and community/volunteer organization, and a list of extracurricular activities and community service. In an essay, students wrote about how they demonstrate one of ESL’s core values — accountability, caring about people, initiative, integrity, and teamwork — in their lives.
