2016 ESL College Scholarship Winners

Second Crop of ESL Scholars Honored

April 2016

Although not quite like a high school graduation, excitement abounded in late April at ESL Headquarters on Chestnut Street. For the second consecutive year, ESL awarded five college-bound high school students $2,000 each from the local financial institution’s college scholarship program.

Amid the pomp and circumstance, as well as student and parental pride, the evening not only highlighted the qualities that each of the students exhibited, but also acknowledged the concern regarding how to pay for the rising costs of a college education.

“With the rising cost of higher education, scholarships can be a deciding factor for students and their families,” said Faheem Masood, President/CEO, ESL Federal Credit Union. “Our ESL College Scholarship award recipients are standouts in the classroom and the community. We are pleased to be able to invest in the future of our youth by awarding scholarships to deserving college-bound students.”

These five students were chosen from nearly 150 applicants as the area’s best and brightest. To be eligible for the scholarships, applicants must have been members in good standing at ESL Federal Credit Union, a high school senior within the Greater Rochester area for the 2015-2016 school year, and be attending an accredited college or university in fall 2016. A panel of judges selected students based on their academic record, extracurricular activities, community service, and most importantly, their reflection of ESL’s Core Values: Accountability, Caring About People, Integrity, Teamwork, and Initiative.
